GLP-1 for weight loss in India: a plain-English guide

GLP-1 medicines for weight loss are everywhere right now, and for good reason. This is a simple, honest guide to what they are, how well they work, who they suit, and how they fit into weight care in India. No hype, no jargon.

What is GLP-1?

GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) is a natural hormone your gut releases after you eat. It tells your brain you are full and slows how fast your stomach empties, so you feel satisfied with less food. GLP-1 medicines like semaglutide and tirzepatide are a stronger, longer-lasting version of that same signal, which is why they reduce appetite and support steady weight loss.

How much weight do they actually help you lose?

The numbers below come from large, peer-reviewed clinical trials:

  • In the STEP 1 trial, adults on weekly semaglutide plus lifestyle support lost about 14.9% of their body weight over 68 weeks, and around 86% lost at least 5% (NEJM, 2021).
  • In the SURMOUNT-1 trial, tirzepatide led to up to 22.5% weight loss at the highest dose (Eli Lilly / NEJM, 2022).
  • And newer medicines go further: in 2026 trials the triple-hormone agonist retatrutide reached about 28-30%, though it is not yet approved (Eli Lilly, 2026).

To put that in context: for someone who weighs 90 kg, 15% is roughly 13-14 kg. Just as important, these results came with medical support and habit changes, not from the medicine alone.

For many people, weight is biology, not a lack of willpower. GLP-1 works with that biology instead of asking you to fight it.

Who might it suit?

A doctor makes the final call, but the usual starting point is:

  • A BMI of 30 or higher, or
  • 27 or higher with a weight-related condition like PCOS, prediabetes, or high blood pressure.

GLP-1 is prescription-only and needs medical screening first. It is not something to buy off a shelf.

Are GLP-1 medicines available in India?

Yes, and access has changed fast. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) launched in India in 2025, followed by Wegovy and Ozempic (both semaglutide) (Forbes India). In March 2026 the semaglutide patent expired and cheap Indian generics launched, cutting prices sharply (Pearce IP, 2026). A doctor helps you weigh cost against what actually suits you.

What about side effects?

Everyone should be screened before starting. The most common early side effects are stomach-related, like nausea or mild constipation, and they usually settle as the dose is raised slowly. This is exactly why GLP-1 is meant to be doctor-supervised.

The bottom line

GLP-1 is one of the most effective tools we have ever had for weight, but it works best as part of real care: a doctor, the right dose, nutrition, and habits that stick. If you are curious whether it fits you, a short consult is the simplest first step.
