Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro: the names get thrown around like they are the same thing. They are not. Here is the honest, jargon-free version, including what is available in India.
Two medicines, several brand names
It helps to separate the medicine from the brand:
- Semaglutide is sold as Ozempic (for type 2 diabetes) and Wegovy (a higher dose, approved specifically for weight management). Same molecule, different dose and label. There is also Rybelsus, a semaglutide tablet.
- Tirzepatide is sold as Mounjaro. It is a newer, dual-action medicine.
So Ozempic and Wegovy are the same drug family; Mounjaro is a different one.
What makes Mounjaro different
Semaglutide works on one hunger hormone (GLP-1). Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) works on two, GLP-1 and GIP, which is why it tends to produce more weight loss in trials: up to about 22.5%, compared with roughly 15% for semaglutide (NEJM STEP 1; SURMOUNT-1). Newer triple-hormone medicines like retatrutide are pushing this toward 30% in trials, but are not yet approved. More is not automatically better for everyone, though, the right choice depends on your health, your goals, and how you tolerate it.
The best medicine is not the strongest one, it is the one that is right and safe for you. That is a decision for a doctor, not a headline.
What is available in India?
Access has moved quickly. Mounjaro launched in India in 2025, followed by Wegovy and then Ozempic (Forbes India). In March 2026 the semaglutide patent expired and cheap generics launched, dropping prices sharply (Pearce IP, 2026). A doctor helps you balance effectiveness, side effects, and cost.
How to choose (the honest answer)
You should not pick these off a headline or a pharmacy shelf. All are prescription-only and need medical screening. A doctor looks at your weight, your health conditions, side effects, and cost, and matches the right option to you. At Joovik, we never promise a specific medicine up front, the doctor decides in your consult.
